Plane Crash all over my News Feed
Minutes ago an unfortunate accident occurred at the plane near our beloved stetson. in no time the social media bug took off. Before i could even turn on the tv my facebook newsfeed blew up with news of the plane crash. This coincides with media pattern of covering crises, once one person finds out they will tell everyone. Facebook and twitter are making it easier for people to spread the word faster this was and is being experienced by us at this moment. Another thing i noticed is that the social media did not translate the sensationalism expressed by the local medi who at one point alluded to terrorist attacks, really what terrorist is going to attack a Publix in Deland. We can see how a crisis causes sensationalism and does use all types of mediums to spread the word. I would encourage everyone here to go on their facebook newsfeeds and observe these phenomenon.

News 13 has had coverage the entire time, commercial free. I also saw on the news a woman's initial response was thinking it was terrorist related, come on really? Are Americans going to have permanent PTSD when it comes to airplanes, and every time a plane crash is reported into a building, is it always going to be a terroristic event?
ReplyDeleteThis was definitely an interesting story to watch develop. I was on the scene with my dad, who is a deputy sheriff, so I was able to watch the story unfold live. However, I could not believe the speed at which my Facebook feed filled up with comments regarding this accident. In a matter of a few minutes, I began to see post after post on Facebook about what had happened. Further, I soon started to see the people who were posting on Facebook walking around outside the scene of the accident.
ReplyDeleteThere is no doubt that social media has changed the way news spreads. However, this story provided a real life example of how social media has significantly changed the news flow. It was also interesting to see Facebook used to spread a local news story in the same way that we have seen Facebook used to spread national news stories.
One of my fraternity brothers was there and is now ok. It was amazing to me that I found out on facebook and through text before the news had even caught a hold of the story. It even took the Fireman 20 minutes to get there while I had already found out and had people out there to help.
