I read this article knowingly that it was not relevant to the discussions we had in class last week as well as the readings on the President and how they affect the media. Today the Supreme Court decided on a five to four decision that strip searching will be permitted under any circumstances before an arrest. This happened due to a man and women being pulled over in 2005 and were searched due to allegations of a unpaid fine that of course had been paid properly. This statue has been forbidden in at least 10 states which has caused tension between the policy making of authorities. The author did his research by finding out from the American Bar Association that the international human rights treaties have also banned those procedures. Most appeal courts have split the decision on searches being done without reasonable suspicion.
How this relates to our discussions in class is this: the author noted that the court had ideological differences due to last week's hearing on Obama's health care law. This statement alone creates reader's such as myself to think well hey its the President's laws who are influencing our courts to make rash decisions such as the motion to strip search without reasonable suspicion. Uneducated individuals, especially the ones who disagree with the court's decision or ruling will automatically think that this is the work of Obama and the influence the power of the President has. It is amazing to me how strong one correlation can be on someone's opinions and then in turn how those people may affect others after reading that.
Another quote that I wasnt happy with was by the Justice Kennedy himself who said that "sometimes the people who are arrested for minor offenses can turn out to be the most dangerous and devious criminals". This is outlandish to me because everyone can make a mistake and now because of a minor infraction they could be labeled as dangerous in officer's minds creating mistreatment, unfairness, and what now is a legal strip search.
