Fox News February 19, 2012
Since we have talked about Casey Anthony and Michael
Jackson, I think it is only fair that we talk about how the media is portraying
Whitney Houston. I turned on Fox News and all they were talking about was how
Whitney Houston was a drug addict and how Bobby Brown is the man who made her
become a drug addict. It seems that when someone passes away, the media does
not want to say anything that is degrading about that person. Fox is saying
that Bobby Brown is the cause of her death because he introduced her to drugs,
when in reality she took the drugs on her own she had a choice! Fox
contradicted what it was saying within 10 minutes. They first said that Bobby
Brown/drugs killed Whitney Houston then they said that they are waiting on the
autopsy report for the cause of death, Fox is adding a bias to the true story.
In addition, while Fox is showing Bobby Brown in a concert,
the scroll on the bottom of the screen is reading that Santorum is surging and
how he is a true threat to Obama in the upcoming election. Is he really a
threat or is media just say this because it will get republicans attention?! The
media is showing Whitney Houston over a possible future president which is just
leading to less informed voters. The media is giving the market place what they
believe they want not information that is essential to citizens.
While fox may be portraying Whitney Houston's death to be caused by Bobby Brown, a lot of the other forms of media (tabloids, social news, radio, magazines, tv specials) are actually saying quite the opposite and actually being, in my opinion, disrespectful to a person who recently died. Fox seems to be painting a nicer picture of Whitney, while most other media outlets are portraying her to be a destructive and unhappy person. I think this is a great example of media bias or selective exposure, media can swing a story any which way they want whether it is a president or a global celebrity.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion I agree with that news sources that say negative things about someone who has passed is disrespectful. This great American Icon has passed let her mother, daughter, brothers, other family members, and friends grieve in peace. Being a fan I have been watching the different news coverage and I did notice that Fox was more negative than CNN or MSNBC. While I do think the coverage has been a little much at times, if people want to see something else or be informed they can easily turn the TV off and get on the computer and be informed about whatever political, world, or any other news they want. But I think it's interesting that no one has been covering how Chris Christie's support of the Houston family could help change the view of Republicans and gain votes for the Republicans in November.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree! Chris Christie took some major heat for telling people of New Jersey to fly their flag half staff. Being a person who lives in NJ I got to see this unfold on my news feed very quickly, with MAJOR negative outcome from his urge to fly the flag at half staff. I actually saw a lot of people stating they wouldn't want him back in office because flying the flag at golf staff is not for celebrities but for police and other political figures. His reasoning for the half staff flying of the flag was because of true mourn and pride that Whitney was gone, a woman who was such a legend and came out of New jersey. While many were upset over the flag I would think people people with state pride would agree with Chris Cristie's idea and support him. A few days after the urge for flying the flag at half staff, Chris Christie was slammed with negative media again after he decided to veto, or call for a citizen based popular vote, gay marriage. I even saw blog posts stating it is horrible that this man let his ideologies getting in the way. This is not negative post regarding gay marriage at all, with that said I think most people need to realize this man was elected based on his ideologies and shouldn't be surprised when he makes decisions based on that ideology, it is the reason we elect people into office.
DeleteWhat I can't stand though is the continued nonstop coverage of Whitney Houston's death. Yes, she passed away unfortunately, and she will be missed. That's really all that needs to be said by a news program. Sure, E! can do a story on her personal and professional life, because that's entertainment and it's not as inappropriate if they exploit a celebrity tragedy like that. However, there is just no reason that we should constantly be seeing "updates" of this "story" on mainstream networks. The fact that Chris Christie has respect for Whitney Houston is not news and it should not be reported as such, or even better, at all.
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree its obnoxious for continuos coverage, Chris Christie's bold move to ask people to fly a flag at half staff is news. Its something we have never seen before and is controversial. The media has the job of showing this to the public whether we are annoyed by it or not.
