Mr. Romney's Foot-in-Mouth Disease

After "thumping" Newt in Florida earlier this week, Mitt sat down with CNN the morning afterwards for the customary celebratory interview. Going into this, I'm sure Mr. Romney thought it'd be a cake walk. He had just won one of the biggest toss-up states for the general election, and he was going to make sure he made the most out of the free airtime he was about to get.

What Mitt got instead is a serious headache, with a very bad prognosis of recovering by November. Video and commentary continues after the jump.

Mitt gave his opponents, both Democrats and Republicans, the worst possible gift: a soundbite. What's worse, the anchor, Soledad O'Brien, called him on it, and rather than immediately retracting the comment, he doubled down on it. And a third time. I can only imagine what his campaign manager was thinking and/or shouting at the monitor, probably something along the lines of "shut up, shut up, SHUT UP!!"

The Obama team is going to love this election cycle. To quote Harold Macmillan, they've never had it so good.

  1. Sam,

Oh, the soundbite. What an excellent point. I would have never focused on that covering this story, but it is so obvious-- they're going to rip him to shreds. As a voter and someone who came from WAY below the poverty level when I still lived with my parents ($18k/yr for a family of 4), I will tell you there are no safety nets. Romney comes from a different world, and has just proven in less than 10 seconds that he does not understand the condition of the working poor. I doubt he has ever had to live paycheck to paycheck, or worry where his next meal is coming from, or watch his wife sleeping at night and be torn in two somewhere in the depths of his being with the question, "How will I take care of her?"

The Democrats cater more to these working poor, and he may very well have just handed Obama the election.
