I actually want to take a moment to reflect on two major things that have happened in a matter of a week. Rewinding back to the Superbowl, we saw Madonna send out a huge message, hoping her fame would be able to get more supporters in the battle for world peace. I happen to find this rather genius because it emphasizes how much of an impact celebrities have over the average person in the United States. While it is nothing new that a celebrity would use their status to send out a bigger message, we have never really seen such a message at such a publicized and televised event. It usually consists of them participating in an ad, being a spokesperson for an organization, or showing up for an appearance at an animal hospital or another NGO event.
Secondly, last nights grammy's attracted many viewers who were mourning the loss of Whitney Houston. Many people were wondering how the grammy's would incorporate the loss into the show. They shocked many viewers, saying a prayer on live television for the first time. Most of the audience bowed their heads in respect for this prayer as well. Where is this heading? We have ALWAYS separated religion and politics from main stream, celebrity style, media. It seems to me we are starting to move away from that separation, and I'm sure there are plenty of people who were pissed off by the religious affiliation linked to last nights grammy awards simply by stating a single prayer for someone's death, but the point is the prayer was there. LL Cool J went ahead and said a prayer, and Madonna went ahead and sent a message to support world peace. To me this is extraordinary. While all of the reactions I have seen and heard have been nothing but positive, I am still curious about how this will pan out.
